Question
I'm looking for a recommendation for a good all-around first
aid book for horses. There are so many titles and price ranges, but I
need to find a good one or ones that give clear diagrams/instructions
and are recent editions. I buy most of my books on-line, as I don't have
a bookstore (new books) in the town I live in. That makes browsing difficult.
Can anyone suggest any good titles for a new horse owner?
Thank
you very much! Sincerely, Leslie Bogula
Answer
Hi Leslie, My
favorite veterinary book is The Illustrated Veterinary Encyclopedia for
Horsemen. It's written by the research staff of Equine Research Publications.
The Editor/Publisher is Don M. Wagoner. I have the older edition, but I
do believe that there is a much more recent edition. My edition contains
728 pages of very in-depth information and a lot of photos and diagrams.
Its a little pricey, in the $65.00-$90.00 price range (depending on who
you buy it from), but its well worth the money spent.
Another good vet book
is Dr. Kellons, Guide to First Aid for Horses. Written by Eleanor Kellon,
VMD and published by Breakthrough Publications, Inc. of New York. It's
a small, handy book that's great for the barn. Also has a lot of good
photos and diagrams and is much less expensive then the first book that
I mentioned at approx. $35.95.
One other good vet
book that I have on my bookshelf is The Revised Health Problems of the
Horse, By Dr. Robert M. Miller, D.V.M. (my vet before his retirement).
The publisher is Western Horseman. There is a lot of really good info
in this book, along with photos and diagrams. There are also some suggestions
for handling techniques when treating horses. The price is an extremely
reasonable $12.95-$18.95 depending on who you buy it from, so there is
no reason not to have this good book.
Hope these book suggestions
help!
Sincerely,
Laura Phelps-Bell
