Laura Phelps-Bell has over 25 years experience in the equine industry
as a trainer and instructor. She began operating her training stable,
Starwood Farms, in 1977 at the age of 18. Her background includes successfully
competing in dressage, on the "A" Open circuit in hunter/jumpers, showing
in many western events, management of several large training/boarding
facilities and teaching equine management courses at the college level.
Laura
has trained and instructed numerous horses and riders that have won National,
Regional and Local championships in hunters, dressage and western events
at various Open and Breed shows. She also teaches horse/rider combinations
to have a mutually trusting and respectful relationship. Using "Combination
Training", Laura utilizes portions of various methods including dressage
fundamentals, natural interaction, psychology and modified clicker training,
to tailor a training program for the individuals involved. She specializes
in teaching green horse/novice rider combinations.
According
to Laura, when a correct foundation is laid, the structure you build upon
it, whether it's dressage, English, jumping, western or trail riding,
will be solid. If a person takes the time to cultivate an understanding
of correct education in the beginning, the training that follows will
be easier for both the horse and rider.
"Controlling
a horse's body is but a scratch upon the surface of our interaction with
them. My goal is to create a meshing of our minds, bodies and spirits.
Only then can we realize true harmony and oneness with our horse," says
Laura.
