Question

Hi Patti,
My mare has been lame on her left foreleg for several months. Her x-rays don't show any bone involvement yet, but there is definite heat in the lower carpus and now I can see a little puffiness. Bayer's product, LEGEND has been recommended, but is there anything you could recommend to help her knee?

Jan

Answer

Hi Jan,
Well, this isn't much information to go on. But I would be concerned that the mare has been lame for several months. I would first find another vet that specializes in lameness issues. Though the x-rays don't show any bone involvement, there may very well be tendon/ligament involvement instead, which takes a very long time to heal. I can't guess what this could be, but it could be one of many different things. You could start her off on a glucosamine/MSM type product and see if there is any improvement, but please contact another vet immediately for another opinion. This is always the best course of action.
